Alghero – Holy Week 2022
The rites of the Holy Week in Alghero involve numerous Italian and Catalan brotherhoods and are organized by the Confraternity of Mercy, also known as the Germans Blancs, with the patronage of the Municipal Administration. At the center of the celebrations is a seventeenth-century wooden simulacrum of the Crucifix, Lo Sant Crist de la Misericòrdia, kept by the Confraternity of the Gonfalone in the church of the Misericordia.
The most intense and dramatic moment of this day and of the whole Holy Week is the rite of the Desclavament, with which every year the community relives the painful moment of the deposit. The rite begins as soon as the procession enters the cathedral and each person in the sacred representation takes his place. Until reaching the culminating moment of the celebration, that of the deposition.
The procession then begins during which the simulacrum is carried, with all the symbols of the Passion, along the streets of the city illuminated by the farols and the lights of the street lamps which for the occasion are covered with a red cloth. The rite ends late at night in the oratory of the Misericordia.
On the morning of Easter Sunday, around ten, we witness the meeting between the two statues of the Risen Christ and the Glorious Madonna. At the same time, two distinct processions emerge from the churches of San Francesco and della Misericordia, accompanying the Virgin and the Triumphant Christ respectively.
These meet in the cheering crowd, the blanks of rifles and firecrackers and, as a sign of glory, the festive sound of the bells of all the churches. The two statues bow to each other and the two processions merge into one, continuing for a short itinerary accompanied by the guilds of arts and crafts (gremi) with their banners. Subsequently the two statues return to the Misericordia, where the Easter Mass is celebrated in the Catalan language and the distribution of the blessed bread takes place.

I riti della Settimana Santa di Alghero coinvolgono numerose confraternite sia italiane che catalane e sono organizzati dalla Confraternita della Misericordia, detta anche dei Germans Blancs, con il patrocinio dell’Amministrazione Comunale.
Al centro dei festeggiamenti è un simulacro seicentesco in legno del Crocifisso, Lo Sant Crist de la Misericòrdia, custodito dalla Confraternita del Gonfalone nella chiesa della Misericordia.
Il momento più intenso e drammatico di questa giornata e di tutta la Settimana Santa è il rito del Desclavament, con il quale ogni anno la collettività rivive il doloroso momento della depositio.
Il rito inizia non appena la processione entra in cattedrale ed ogni personaggio della sacra rappresentazione si colloca al suo posto. Fino a giungere al momento culminante della celebrazione, quello della deposizione. Si avvia quindi la processione durante la quale il simulacro è portato, con tutti i simboli della Passione, lungo le vie della città illuminata dai farols e dalle luci dei lampioni che per l’occasione vengono ricoperti da un drappo rosso. Il rito si conclude a notte fonda nell’oratorio della Misericordia.
Contemporaneamente dalle chiese di San Francesco e della Misericordia escono due distinte processioni che accompagnano, rispettivamente, la Vergine e il Cristo Trionfante.
Queste si incontrano fra la folla festante, gli spari a salve dei fucili e dei mortaretti e, in segno di gloria, il suono festoso delle campane di tutte le chiese. Le due statue si inchinano l’una all’altra e le due processioni si fondono in una, proseguendo per un breve itinerario accompagnate dalle corporazioni di arti e mestieri (gremi) con i loro vessilli.
Successivamente le due statue rientrano alla Misericordia, dove si celebra la Messa pasquale in lingua catalana e avviene la distribuzione del pane benedetto.
